Spider Web Engulfs Texas Park Trail

POINT — Entomologists are debating the origin and rarity of a sprawling spider web that blankets several trees, shrubs and the ground along a 200-yard stretch of trail in a North Texas park.Officials at Lake Tawakoni State Park say the massive mosquito trap is a big attraction for some visitors, while others won't go anywhere near it."At first, it was so white it looked like fairyland," said Donna Garde, superintendent of the park about 45 miles east of Dallas. "Now it's filled with so many mosquitoes that it's turned a little brown. There are times you can literally hear the screech of millions of mosquitoes caught in those webs."

Last.fm – Audio Fingerprinting for Clean Metadata

Phase 1 is now underway with the first public “beta” release of our new fingerprinting technology. This will mature into a nice sexy (free) API that lets you grab clean metadata based on an audio fingerprint. For now, all that it does is send the fingerprint data to bootstrap the moderation system. This doesn’t change any MP3 files on your computer. It does send useful fingerprint data to our moderation system so we can get the ball rolling. If you have a big MP3 collection, it will take a while… Thankfully it remembers where it got to, so you don’t have to do it all in one session.

The proposed ordinance states that "the indecent exposure of his or her undergarments" would be unlawful in a public place. Atlanta Councilman C.T. Martin, a college recruitment consultant, calls jumbo-sized drawers that show off boxers underneath an epidemic that's becoming a major concern. But Seagraves said any legislation that creates a dress code would not survive a court challenge.

Cardboard cops slow speedsters

Earlier this month, the city commissioned a life-size, corrugated plastic cutout of Miller, posing with his radar gun, a menacing scowl on his face. They post the cutout in high-traffic areas, hoping that it will deter speeders."It's meant to get people to think about it and slow down. It's actually worked," said Miller, the head of Smyrna's traffic enforcement division.

Does the average person consume four spiders per year in his sleep?

For a spider to get into your mouth while you're sleeping, (a) you must have your mouth OPEN, which is certainly not universal, so there's a big chunk of people who can never swallow anything; (b) there has to be a wandering spider in your immediate vicinity, also something which--for most people in the civilized world, at least--is a fairly rare occurrence; (c) the spider has to either jump or fall into your mouth from a long distance, because they won't go near your mouth otherwise (they're not suicidal), and the odds are pretty astronomical of a spider randomly dropping into your mouth from the ceiling.Put it all together, and it would be a miracle for a spider to end up in anyone's mouth while they're sleeping, except for one rare circumstance--when a spider egg sac hatches indoors.

How to Wipe Your Ass

I was curious, so I began to ask around. I posed the question to a couple good friends of mine, and my suspicions were confirmed when each of them came back with an entirely different answer. I decided to dig deeper, asking people via email, message boards, and eventually the Starbucks where my girlfriend works, all to ask the question: how do you wipe your ass?

kameraflageTM allows for a new level of expression for those who are required to wear a uniform. Students at private schools and employees of chain-stores will be able to express themselves to their cameraphone toting peers. Will entities that seek to enforce dress-codes be able to combat this technology? Because it is only perceptible within the confines of mediated reality (cyberspace), yet exists in physical-reality, any attempt to control this form of expression will result in forcing people to discuss this decidedly modern grey-area.

Recycling Your Gum (TreeHugger)

gummybins-jj-001.jpg
Sure, it's nothing ground-breaking or even particularly innovative; given its sheer ease-of-use and practicality, however, should that even really matter? Two companies, Canadian Envyrobubble and British Gummy Bins, have come out with a neat solution to our chronic chewing gum littering situation: little collection bins designed for public spaces that can hold 250 - 1,000 pieces of gum each. While we often tend to focus on the bigger items littering our streets and parks — soda cans, food wrappers, etc — discarded chewing gum can become a serious problem requiring a lot of man-hours and cash to remove.
