Flaming Lips' Freaky, Martian Musical Finally Touches Down

As frontman for the Flaming Lips, Wayne Coyne always makes sure his audience gets the most whiz-bang for its buck. At live gigs, that means trotting around inside a giant hamster ball while dozens of Santas and aliens shimmy onstage. And this holiday season it means a feature film. After seven years, Christmas on Mars, Coyne's sure-to-be cult classic, is ready to touch down on October 28. Shot in his native Oklahoma City, the shoestring sci-fi flick is the story of colonists on the Red Planet who are having the worst Yuletide ever. A Christmas baby—who may be the only hope for humanity—gestates in an artificial womb, but the colony's oxygen and gravity systems are failing. Can the savior be saved? Wired talked to Coyne about his directorial debut.

Robots Don’t Know Anything About Twitter!

Robots don't know anything...
We started at 11am on Saturday and I immediately started drawing robots. Picking up on the theme, I sent a Twitter saying “Robots don’t know anything about ______”. I quickly had over 20 responses, so I decided to try to work suggestions from Twitter into each page of my comic. The resulting 24hr comic, appropriately titled “Robots Don’t Know Anything About Twitter“, is a mix of pop culture references with a nerdy slant. As is the nature of any improvised art, some parts are better than others, but I can state for a fact that every single joke is funny… If you don’t get any of the references or jokes within, then I’m sorry to inform you that you must be a robot.

More Copyright law videos at 5min.com

Superman v. The Greatest American Hero: After the success of Superman: The Movie and Superman II, the vision of William Katt sailing through the skies in a red suit and cape proved too much for Warner Bros. and DC, who quickly filed an injunction against ABC’s klutzy superhero. The Greatest American Hero’s Story: An alien gives schoolteacher Ralph Hinkley a superpowered suit in order to protect the people of Earth. The suit gives Ralph a mess of powers — flight, super strength, invisibility, telekinesis, super speed — but not the knowledge to use them properly.

Man nabbed with frozen shrimp bags down his pants

BRADENTON — Authorities said a man tried to steal several bags of frozen shrimp from a supermarket by hiding them down his pants. The Manatee County Sheriff's Office reported that an off-duty detective was shopping at a Sweetbay supermarket Sunday when he noticed what appeared to be a man with groceries stuffed in his pants. The detective approached the 32-year-old man and ordered him to stop. Paper that Self-Erases After 24 Hours

XEROX Erasable Paper photo
Recycling's better than sending good paper to the landfill. Even better is not printing in the first place. But there's still a lot of stuff that comes out of printers and some studies show that more than 40% gets discarded on the day it was produced (and a lot of the rest gets discarded not much later, or gets stuffed in a box and is never looked at again). The researchers at XEROX looked at that problem and came up with a paper that self-erases within 24 hours and can then be re-used.

Free the Airwaves

Free the Airwaves
Remember that fuzzy static between channels on the old TVs? Today more than three-quarters of those radio airwaves, or "white  space" spectrum, are completely unused. This vast public resource could offer a revolution in wireless services of all kinds, including universal wireless Internet. The FCC will soon decide whether to open this unused spectrum for general usage, and your voice matters -- a lot. So if you agree that freeing the white spaces represents a vote for the future of the Internet, please sign our petition and help spread the word about this campaign

Mom allegedly uses daughter's ID to be cheerleader

Only in Green Bay could this woman be mistaken for a 15 year-old

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — A 33-year-old woman stole her daughter's identity to attend high school and join the cheerleading squad, according to a criminal complaint filed against the woman.Wendy Brown, of Green Bay, faces a felony identity theft charge after enrolling in Ashwaubenon High School as her 15-year-old daughter, who lives in Nevada with Brown's mother.

According to the complaint, Brown wanted to get her high school degree and become a cheerleader because she didn't have a childhood and wanted to regain a part of her life that she'd missed.

Brown allegedly attended cheerleading practices before school started, received a cheerleader's locker and went to a pool party at the cheerleading coach's house.

The $134.50 check Brown gave to the cheerleading coach for her uniform bounced, the complaint said.

A high school employee, Kim Demeny, told authorities that the woman, posing as the teen, seemed very timid. Demeny said she told her she was not good at math and even cried when she talked about moving from Pahrump Valley High School in Nevada. Demeny said she looked older than a student but had the demeanor of a high school girl.

in very readable format Google gives the technical details into a project of theirs: an open source browser called Google Chrome. The book points to www.google.com/chrome, but I can’t see anything live there yet. In a nut-shell, here’s what the comic announces Google Chrome to be: * Google Chrome is Google’s open source browser project. As rumored before under the name of “Google Browser”, this will be based on the existing rendering engine Webkit. Furthermore, it will include Google’s Gears project.

Introducing Ubiquity

Today we’re announcing the launch of Ubiquity, a Mozilla Labs experiment into connecting the Web with language in an attempt to find new user interfaces that could make it possible for everyone to do common Web tasks more quickly and easily. The overall goals of Ubiquity are to explore how best to:

* Empower users to control the web browser with language-based instructions. (With search, users type what they want to find. With Ubiquity, they type what they want to do.)

* Enable on-demand, user-generated mashups with existing open Web APIs. (In other words, allowing everyone–not just Web developers–to remix the Web so it fits their needs, no matter what page they are on, or what they are doing.)

* Use Trust networks and social constructs to balance security with ease of extensibility. * Extend the browser functionality easily.

Space Cube Linux Computer

In my hand for comparison
It’s fair to say that the Space Cube isn’t overloaded with storage space, either. Sixteen megabytes of flash memory is included on-board, and the OS - a version of Red Hat, the popular Linux operating system - runs off a 1GB CompactFlash card that slots into the side of the Space Cube. There’s also 64MB of DDR SDRAM that, admittedly, doesn’t even match up to the lowliest of netbooks - let alone a desktop PC.The Space Cube’s chassis is, well, a marvel. It’s utterly rock solid and made of metal - we were worried it was going to be a bit of a flimsy plastic prototype - and is clearly able to withstand more than a few knocks up in orbit.

7 Comic Book Superpowers the World Can Do Without

1. The Power to Eat Things
Picture 331.png
If you’re desperate for heroes with mediocre superpowers, look no further than the Legion of Super-Heroes, the 30th-century superhero squad that started out in 1958. Packed with uninspiring members, the legion featured the likes of Bouncing Boy (who could bounce around like a ball), Chlorophyll Kid (who could make plants grow faster) and Dream Girl (who could tell the future through dreams). But the strangest of all was Matter-Eater Lad, who just ate things. Matter-Eater Lad’s finest moment was stopping an indestructible machine from destroying the universe… by eating it. The storylines were that good. In 1993, DC Comics decided that the character was too silly for the newer, grittier style of comics, and he was rewritten as the Legion’s personal chef, who didn’t really get involved in the combat.

Debian delivers FreeRunner open-phone package

The announcement, during Debian's DebConf8 in Mar del Plata, Argentina, points out the potential upside for the nascent FreeRunner: the Debian ecosystem brings more than 20,000 applications to the FreeRunner, launched in July and the successor to Openmoko's Neo 1973 - claimed to be the first open mobile phone.More importantly, the availability of Debian as a development platform gives Openmoko a leg up in the increasingly competitive market for open smart mobile devices based on Linux. Debian joins Qtopia and GTK+ as development platform options for the FreeRunner. The move gives Debian a lift after Intel revealed it was dropping the Debian-based Ubuntu Linux in favor of Fedora for the second version of its Moblin mobile Linux project.
