Is 17 the "most random" number?

The idea is that 17 will always be the most common answer when people are asked to choose a number between 1 and 20. But neither Cosmic Variance nor Pharyngula offered a reasonable means of testing this proposition. That's where our poll came in. This morning, I took a look at our data, and with 347 responses, I can confirm that 17 is significantly more popular than any number.

The Ropes at Disney

Ever wonder what it was like to work at the Disney Studio during the Golden Age of Animation? Think it was the "happiest place on Earth"? Think again. This 1943 booklet, given to all new employees, spelled it out for you. Gals ain't allowed in the Penthouse Club, personal phone calls will be charged to you, and if you need to leave the studio, you cannot do so without an "Off the Lot Pass". Oh, and "Any violation of the U. S. Espionage Act" will get you discharged.

New license plates don't measure up

Michigan's white-on-blue license plates are being replaced with blue-on-white plates meant to be easier to make and easier to see at night. But a faulty die, used to cut the plates and stamp the holes, has made it so two of the holes on some of the new plates don't line up with the mounting holes in vehicles.

Bill Banning iPods In Crosswalks Slated For Albany

Woman With iPod
First it was cell phones in cars, then trans fats. Now, a new plan is on the table to ban gadget use while crossing city streets. We all seem to have one -- an iPod, a BlackBerry, a cell phone -- taking up more and more of our time, but can they make us too distracted to walk safely? Some people think so.If you use them in the crosswalk, your favorite electronic devices could be in the crosshairs.Legislation will be introduced in Albany on Wednesday to lay a $100 fine on pedestrians succumbing to what State Sen. Carl Kruger calls iPod oblivion.

Let you PC recognize you with BiodeLogon

NecSoft, a NEC subsidiary, offers BiodeLogon, a new software to log on to Windows. There are several ways to access a PC, but image recognition is probably the easiest one for the end user. With the NecSoft software, you just have to show your pretty face to the webcam to access your computer. NecSoft made this system as simple as possible so it can work in different situations. However, I haven’t found any info yet on how to prevent a hacker from showing a photo in HD to the camera instead of the user’s real face…

Bridges linked to Marvel's 'Iron Man'

"We've been talking to Jeff for long time," Marvel's president of production Kevin Feige said. "He's excited about doing a movie like this, and we're excited to have him in this particular role. There are many facets to this character which I can't discuss, but looking at the spectrum of all of Jeff's roles, this fits in nicely with the man who played 'Starman,' 'Tucker,' 'Big Lebowski' with a little bit 'Tron' thrown in.
