It's the Romans' fault. Our modern calendar is loosely based on their old, confusing one. Though records on the Roman calendar are sparse and sketchy, legend has it that Romulus, the first king of Rome, devised a 10-month lunar calendar that began at the spring equinox in March and ended with December. It is unclear whether there were any official months between December and March, but it's likely they were left off because the wintertime wasn't important for the harvest. The second king of Rome, Numa Pompilius, decided to make the calendar more accurate by syncing it up with the actual lunar year—which is about 354 days long. Numa tacked on two months—January and February—after December to account for the new days.

Nic, Daniel, Garrett Ian, Daniel , Justin and Craig are engineering and computer science students at New Jersey Institute of Technology, so when they saw that mother nature was dropping some white stuff on the ground outside, they decided to construct a wonderfully nerdy shrine to their favorite Italian plumber. Apparently, they used a string grid to get it, right. We're not quite sure what that means, but the result sure is cool. Check out the photos below.

Specifically, users wanted the top-three free Linuxes -- Ubuntu, Fedora, and openSUSE -- offered as selections for the Dell desktop. The Linux option was almost twice as popular as the next option. That next option was, by the way, to have OpenOffice pre-installed instead of Microsoft Works or a trial version of Microsoft Office. After that, the fourth most popular option was for Dell to offer a laptop with Linux pre-installed. The fifth on the list was, if Dell couldn't offer Linux pre-installed, was to start offering systems without any operating system.

in 1956, Chrysler Corporation stepped up to offer car buyers a new listening option – an in-car phonograph. The players, made by Columbia, were mounted on the bottom edge of the dash, directly above the transmission hump, and were wired directly into the car radio. Pressing a button on the front cover of the player opened it, allowing the turntable to be slid outward. Flipping a switch on the left side of the player bypassed the radio tuner, and the radio’s amplifier then could boost the signal from the player while volume, tone and balance could be controlled by the regular radio knobs.
It seemed like a good idea at the time

You know how it is when you're visiting your parents and one of them suddenly tells you that on the day of your birth they sold your soul to Satan? I tell you, that's something you never forget, and it's also the premise of a new series for the CW called Reaper. The pilot will be directed by indie filmmaker Kevin Smith and will begin shooting in Vancouver next month.

Free Geek does most of this work with volunteers (at any given time, about 200 are active). The volunteers disassemble the donated equipment and test the components, which are either recycled as electronic scrap or recycled into refurbished systems. Eric Powell stands poised to tackle an icon, and the timing couldn’t be better. The man best known for his creator-owned book The Goon has been pegged to pencil a three-issue Action Comics arc beginning in issue #854 that will focus on the Bizarro World discovered in Action Comics Annual #10.“He’s going to be perfect for this arc, and I’m really looking forward to it,” exclaims Action Comics writer and Powell collaborator Geoff Johns. “He can bring a point of view to Bizarro World that I don’t think a lot of guys could.”“I get to draw a bunch of whacked-out stuff in Bizarro World,” says Powell. “If I was ever meant to draw a Superman story, this is it.”

SHANGHAI, China (AP) -- Having boldly gone where no spud has before, Chinese space potatoes are now the latest culinary fad to hit the country's ultra-trendy commercial hub of Shanghai.Slightly sweet and purple in color, the potatoes, named Purple Orchid Three, are bred from seeds that mutated while being carried aboard a Chinese spacecraft, the Shanghai Daily newspaper reported Monday.Grower Haikou Purple Orchid Co. Ltd. is promoting them as a unique food option, and restaurants in the city are offering them for Valentine's Day dinners, served crispy fried, or in salads, desserts and even iced drinks, the newspaper said.China's space program claims to have produced numerous mutated fruits and vegetables by exposing seeds to space radiation, capsule pressure and weightlessness.

From the year 2000 came this whacky little series in which DC Comics' superhero top dogs teamed up with none-other than the Looney Tunes! The idea is as nutty as it gets but whether it really works is down to personal opinion. My opinion is that Superman & Bugs Bunny is an easy, quick, fun, silly, escapist nonsense of a read which could have been better, could have been worse.

In the fall of 2003, Bren Bataclan began his outdoor art installation, "Smile Boston Project." To start the project, the artist left his cartoon inspired paintings for people to take for "free" all over Boston (parks, trains, schools, hospitals, etc.). Attached to each painting is a note saying, "This painting is yours if you promise to smile at random people more often." Bren has since left paintings all over the globe and the Smile Project has evolved into a phenomenon that has long since eclipsed its humble beginnings.
