The Smile Project
In the fall of 2003, Bren Bataclan began his outdoor art installation, "Smile Boston Project." To start the project, the artist left his cartoon inspired paintings for people to take for "free" all over Boston (parks, trains, schools, hospitals, etc.). Attached to each painting is a note saying, "This painting is yours if you promise to smile at random people more often." Bren has since left paintings all over the globe and the Smile Project has evolved into a phenomenon that has long since eclipsed its humble beginnings.

Tasered Grandma Fined in Police Scuffle
KANSAS CITY, MO. — A 69-year-old woman who was Tasered by police two years ago in a scuffle after honking her horn at a patrol car has been convicted of shoving an officer and resisting arrest.But a Circuit Court jury refused to send Louise Jones to jail, fining her $650 instead.Jones' attorney, Basil North, said he might appeal. "We don't think she should have been convicted of anything," he said.

Is 17 the "most random" number?
The idea is that 17 will always be the most common answer when people are asked to choose a number between 1 and 20. But neither Cosmic Variance nor Pharyngula offered a reasonable means of testing this proposition. That's where our poll came in. This morning, I took a look at our data, and with 347 responses, I can confirm that 17 is significantly more popular than any number.

Michigan's white-on-blue license plates are being replaced with blue-on-white plates meant to be easier to make and easier to see at night.But a faulty die, used to cut the plates and stamp the holes, has made it so two of the holes on some of the new plates don't line up with the mounting holes in vehicles.
